United States Air Force Academy Olympic Sports Weight Training Facility
The United States Air Force Academy’s Olympic Sports Weight Training Facility is now complete, and the final results speak for themselves. In comes 12 Custom FTR Racks, 12 Double Sided Racks, Glute Ham Benches, Combo Benches, Wood Technique Boxes, Plyo Boxes and more! The FTR Racks feature adjustable cable units incorporated off the back side of the Half Rack Design. This allows for a multitude of training options all while saving on valuable floor space thanks to its compact design. Each Rack is linked horizontally with various chin-up options as well as custom storage for plates, wrist roller attachments, dip attachments, and custom graphic shields.

Project Overview for Tactical Strength Coaches
Located in Colorado Springs, Colorado, the Air Force Academy operates at more than 7000 feet above sea level. This high elevation environment tests endurance, recovery, and strength capacity unlike any other. The Falcon Athletic Center’s weight training complex spans roughly 23,000 square feet and supports the Academy’s Olympic sports programs. Public facility details confirm that the Air Force invested in performance infrastructure designed to match its mission of developing elite tactical athletes as described on

The layout of this facility prioritizes readiness, throughput, and coaching visibility. Wide movement lanes allow multiple teams to transition through sessions efficiently. Each rack station functions as a complete pod for strength, power, and accessory work, perfectly suited for military or tactical environments where organization and efficiency are essential.
Equipment Highlights Built for Tactical Training
- Custom FTR Racks: Compact half rack design with integrated cable units for rows, presses, and anti rotation work within a single station.
- Double Sided Racks: Dual facing configuration that doubles barbell capacity while maintaining open training space.
- Glute Ham Developers and Combo Benches: Posterior chain and pressing systems built to handle high repetition and heavy load cycles.
- Wood Technique Boxes and Plyo Boxes: Used for teaching Olympic lift mechanics, power production, and jump training progression.
- Horizontal Rack Linking: Provides chin up bars, wrist roller stations, dip attachments, and integrated plate storage for operational efficiency.
Every component was designed to align with the Air Force Academy’s emphasis on precision, durability, and elite performance outcomes.
Design Considerations for Tactical Strength and Conditioning Programs
For military and tactical strength coaches, the Air Force Academy serves as a model for how space and equipment can drive operational readiness. The pod-based setup allows multiple athletes to work simultaneously while maintaining smooth flow between lifts and accessory movements. The integrated cable systems behind each rack eliminate the need for stand-alone cable machines, keeping lanes clear for movement and reducing transition time.
Training at altitude demands careful attention to recovery and adaptation. The USAFA training environment challenges athletes to maintain strength and conditioning under lower oxygen levels, preparing them for performance across varied terrains and climates. Coaches focused on tactical human performance can draw key lessons from this design: build for durability, efficiency, and continuous readiness.
Outcomes and Long Term Reliability
Tactical facilities must operate continuously under heavy use and demanding conditions. Samson builds for these realities. The USAFA installation uses welded frames, industrial grade hardware, and thick gauge steel throughout every station. These materials ensure that strength coaches and service members have reliable tools that can endure years of daily cycles. The result is a facility that reflects the mission—prepared, disciplined, and built for endurance.
